DIY JEWELRY DISPLAY

As you may or may not know, I recently fell off the map of this blog. But I did not forget a certain Meghan Nye's 23rd Birthday. She is the most kind and loving person I know, and I knew that I wanted to do something special for her, even though we are now separated by many miles.

As a fellow crafty friend, I knew she would enjoy a handmade gift. I had been wanting to make some kind of jewelery display for a while, so knew this was just the thing for her. She loves to accessorize with gems, so I thought I would pick one of those as well.

First I found the gem. I found it on Etsy, because I love it, and she loves things that are unique. I got it from HalesBeeHandmade, which has a lot of cute, eclectic things. I particularly thought Meg would like this, and I could see her wearing it with skinny jeans, a cardigan, and possibly a scarf.

Then I started with the display board. First I gathered my materials.

And got to work. I would have loved to do something bigger, so that she could have displayed all her gems at one time, but I was limited by this stupid thing called the US postal service's shipping rates. Then I got to painting. I wanted to do something very contrasting, so I picked metallic copper and lime green. But when I started painting the copper paint, it looked a little bit more like baby poop. This photo does not do it justice.

After a quick exchangeroo, I finished painting, hammered in some nails to hang the gems on, and ended up with a finished product that looked like this.

The front panel is the metallic copper, and the edging and details are lime green. At the last minute, I added her little initial to balance it out. And there is the gem (necklace) hanging on its holder!

I had so much fun making this gift for my dear friend. I hope she had a wonderful birthday, and I miss her very much. Everyone better watch out for Christmas! That is a SUPER crafty time!!
