Books to Read: The Twelve Tribes of Hattie

I actually heard about this book on NPR when I was driving around for work during the middle of the day. They were interviewing Ayana Mathis about The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, which is her first novel. I thought  that everything she had to say about herself and her work was so interesting, that I just had to check it out

So I bought this with the other half of my Christmas Barnes and Noble gift card. And it was so good, and the structure was so different, I read it in about 1.5 Saturdays.

The Twelve Tribes of Hattie is set during the Great Migration. The main character is Hattie Shephard, and her "12 tribes," or 11 children and 1 grandchild. Each chapter is told from someone else's point of view, in a different time period. This is what makes the book such a quick read. You are constantly learning new information about the family, and what shapes their dynamic. The family has so many struggles-- but throughout every story you are able to find beauty in their every day lives. It is this beauty, as well as the vibrant (and sometimes not) personalities, that makes this a real page turner.
