RESOURCES FOR A DIY BLOG MAKEOVER

I recently spent a little time on a makeover for my little slice of the internet. I wasn't really in love with my old look, and I felt that with my renewed commitment, I needed a fresh space. There have been some sales on custom blog designs that I have seen out there, but I really wanted to hone my skills and see if I could do it myself. Plus I'm a little cheap.

I've made some changes myself over the years...but nothing this extensive. I've never undertaken this large of a change, but it actually wasn't that bad. I really wanted this space to look more professional and clean, and I think it is starting to look nice (I'd love to know your thoughts!!). And it's actually kind of fun to play with code--sort of like a puzzle.

However I would have been blind without the many resources that were put together by this amazing community. I can't express my gratitude enough for the amazing people who put these tutorials and free materials together. Y'all are amazing.

Here are some of the resources that I used when I was completing my blog makeover:

1. If you want to make your own fancy blog header, you want to look at Wonder Forest. Dana put together a great tutorial that focuses on design more than on a step-by-step process. I love how my simple header turned out.

2. If you want to create your own social media icons, go to Projects Around the House, but if you are looking for some simple free ones (like I did), stop by Carrie Loves.

3. If you want to remove the "shadow" or "glow" from the edge of your borders on your Blogger template, there is an easy tutorial at Xomisse.

4. And I highly recommend Snapwidget for Instagram in Blogger!

5. I mentioned Carrie Loves earlier, but I read a lot of her tutorials for many basic edits. I highly recommend all of her techie tips and Blogger tutorials if you are looking to make any edits to the design of your blog. She is a treasure trove of information!!

Please let me know if you know of any other sources that I haven't mentioned that you know of and might love! I'd love to check them out!

    1. Thank you! I love experimenting with the design on my blog to get the right "feel" that I want. I probably change it more than I should, but there aren't any rules about that, right!

  10. Hello, You did a great job your blog is clean and crisp! My blog has had a makeover, but I pain a very sweet lady. Mine is rather busy and filled with a tn of images. But it is home...
I have been thinking of having a second blog that I can play with a design and write more of my thoughts and opinions that I feel and see and need a place to express them!

    Blessings, Miss Roxy

    1. Thank you for your kind words! I thought about having someone do the design for me, but I constantly find myself tweaking it. I wouldn't want to invest money into something and then want to change it.

Go for it! I have been writing here for a couple of years, but that is kind of what this space started out as. I say do whatever makes you happy!

  13. Thanks! This summer I actually got really frustrated and bought a template on etsy that would allow for some customization by me. I still enjoy playing around with my template and changing things as I want to (I changed my header just a couple of weeks ago to include those purple flowers), I had to install the parts of the template separately which was kind of difficult, but I could do the parts that I wanted and not the ones that I didn't. I think it cost me $10?

I've found that there is a lot of free stuff out there, but if you don't have some of the resources (I don't have photoshop), it can become hard to create your own buttons and icons and things. Sometimes it is worth it to purchase the ones that you want and then to just put them together.

And to be honest, even thought I enjoy playing with coding and designing, sometimes I think about just pulling the trigger and paying for a nice, professional design that I think fits me.

Sorry for the life story!! Please let me know if this helps you!! I would love to chat about this more!!
