I have combination to oily skin. Sometimes it seems fine, and other times...BAM. It seems like you could fry an egg on my face. Which personally I think is gross, and I like to avoid it. I have tried many different methods over the years to keep my sometimes-oil-slick and acne prone skin under control. I've even written here about trying the oil cleansing method, and some homemade masks.

I've found that some of the best products out there for combination to oily skin are those that contain charcoal or some sort of clay. I find that the addition of charcoal gives me enough of the daily exfoliation that I need, without being too much. The charcoal also will soak up the excess oil that is on your face, without stripping it in a harsh way.

When I am using products that contain charcoal, I find that my skin is very smooth, bright and has an even tone. I never would have that if I used a cleanser full of chemicals or acid. Below are some of my favorite products that I've found in the past couple of years:

LUSH | Cleansing Charcoal Bar - 13.95 for 3.5 oz

I loved using this bar. You use it like you would use a bar of soap. It feels a little gritty, but it always left my face feeling very clean for the entire day. It is a little bit expensive for how much you get, especially because of how you use it. I also bought a small tin from Lush to store this in when I'm not using it. It also doesn't have an amazing smell, but I think it does the best job at cleansing. I have purchased this multiple times, and will definitely purchase it again.

FIRST AID BEAUTY | Skin Rescue Deep Cleanser with Red Clay - $24.00 for 4.7 oz

I bought this from Sephora from a recommendation from a friend. She raved about it, and I am just as excited as she was. This is a very mild, foaming cleanser that I would use in the shower. You need very little to keep your face clean and oil free. Continuous use is best, and with this cleanser, I really saw my complexion balance. Even though it is pretty expensive, it lasted me a long time. I would purchase this again.

GARNIER | Clean + Shine Control Cleansing Gel - $7.99 for 5 oz

This is the cleanser that I am currently using, and I purchased it at Walmart because I ran out of the First Aid Beauty before we went on vacation. So far it is working okay, but I think I need to use it a little more continuously before I make a solid judgement. Garnier's website says that you will see best results in one week, and that is about where I am right now. So we will see. I do notice the same effects when I first use this cleanser, but the clean face feeling doesn't last all day like the other two.

So I will continue to be on the hunt for facial cleansers that will work with my combination to oily skin. I also should note that I also moisturize daily with an oil free moisturizer. Usually a BB or a CC cream.

Does anyone use any of these products? Do you like them? What works for you if you have combination or oily skin?

  1. I wish there's a lush closer to where I live. I've heard of the second one I've seen it an review before. Just still hesitant when it comes to purchasing new products. I will see if I can pick this up. Thank you for the review.

    1. You can always purchase Lush products online. I have done that before with some bath products and they come pretty quickly. If you are hesitant, make sure to read all the reviews on the website before purchasing. I do that at Lush and Sephora.

I hadn't had a Lush or a Sephora close to me until I moved to Norfolk! So it is totally doable!

  2. Great finds. I love using charcoal on my oily skin.

    1. Thanks Cari! It was so weird at first, but it makes sense. Do you have any other recommendations? I am always open to trying new things.
