Five Things That Annoy Me About Working in a Cubicle

Happy Friday! I absolutely cannot wait to get out of my office today. I even volunteered to go on an hour round trip drive for an errand because I can't stand to be inside any longer. Because I'm being a sourpuss about being at work today, I am compiling a list of five things that annoy me about working in a cubicle.

1. People who hover.
My cube happens to be across from the bosses office. Joy. So it tends to be the spot where people wait for him to get off the phone, get out of meetings, etc. Really guys, I love you but I accomplish nothing when everyone is constantly lurking around my cube. Sometimes I wish I had a door to shut when I'm working on important things (like payroll!).

Also, when meetings randomly occur in a cubicle near you, and you have to pretend not to be listening. Awkward.

2. Loud eaters.
I think this is one of the grossest things in the world, and when we are all eating at our desks, it sounds like a zoo. Use manners. If your coffee is really that hot that you need to slurp it like that, maybe you should just wait a second. Lady across the hall from me- you have been shaking your salad for approximately ten minutes... I think you got the dressing on it all. Also, close your mouth while you are chewing.

3. Fluorescent lights.
Everyone who has actual offices with doors creates "mood lighting," which seems to be better on the eyes and for focusing. We are stuck with the brightest lights ever. My boss keeps commenting how "bright it is" out here every time he sees me. Almost like hes rubbing it in. I get it. I live in a constant artificial daytime.

4. People who make unnecessary noise.
Including but not limited to: Sighing, whistling, humming, throat clearing, and foot shaking. Seriously people. Do you need to be making sounds while you type? I don't think so. Be quiet.

5. People constantly leave things in my cube.
Just because this is a semi-open concept office, does not give everyone the right to leave everything they want stored in my cubicle. Real life picture of things hanging out with me right now. Please note: extra computer, laptop, 2 reams of paper, 2 computer keyboards, cookie sheet (?), cd burner, multiple books.

I realize while reading this that it makes me seem like a big old curmudgeon. But really I wish I just had a door. Do you share my woes about working in a cubicle or an open concept office?

  1. I could have written this myself! I am working in a cubicle for the first time and it's driving me nuts. Add to the list- people who take very personal phone calls and talk loudly for an extended period of time. I know more about these people than I ever wanted to!

  2. OMG, this would drive me nuts. Especially the loud chewing. LOL @ being in a zoo :p I used to have a manager who would finish a tuna sandwich and then lean over me to show me things on the computer. ONE TIME she actually BURPED in my face. I'm not even kidding. I was so grossed out, I saw red for a few minutes there. Ugh. I work from home, and it can be isolating, but there are things about cubicle living I don't miss at all (this list solidifies them!).

Stopping in from SITS Sharefest today--thanks for the laugh :)

  4. I always wanted to work in a cubicle when I was younger but now that I've gotten older, my eyes have been opened! Your post made me chuckle. I absolutely hate people hovering! Great post.

  5. Another fellow cube dweller :) ! And totally agree with all your points! But my greatest annoyance has to be people who prepare/consume non-cube friendly foods in their cubicles..reheating last night's fish dinner in the communal microwave is never ok! Please just bring in a sandwich like everyone else. Great post :)

  6. Found this on the City of Links party. I've worked in a similar set up before and I know what you're talking about, but I've never had a baking tray left ay my desk before. Diane @ Mrs U Makes

    1. Well... where I work we set up temporary housing for visiting artists. So one of them left the pan there (and it's still here!)

      Thanks for visiting!

  7. That is VERY annoying that they leave random things in your cubicle! Obviously they don't want it in their space, so why do they think it's okay to be put into yours! Also, I can not stand people who hover either; biggest work pet peeve.
