My 2015 Reading Goals

I talked about my focus word of the year on Thursday, but I mentioned that I had some specific goals for this year. Over the next couple of days, I want to outline these goals for you, mostly so that I can hold myself accountable. Also, so that if I talk about them, you'll know what I'm talking about :)

According to my Goodreads account, I only read 14 books in 2014. That is pretty pitiful for someone who claims she loves to read. I always have an audio book playing in my car, but I really could be doing better.

This year, I have a couple of goals to help myself get back into reading. It is something that I love to do, and it truly relaxes me. Even when I am reading (and listening to) fiction, I feel that I am doing something that stimulates me intellectually. So this year I hope to:

-Read 60 books in 2015. This is a lofty goal, but I know people who read more than this last year. This averages to 5 books per month.

-Participate in a book club. Whether it is an in person book club or an internet one, I think talking about what you read is just as fun as reading it.

-Keep better track of what I read. I have had my Goodreads account for almost 2 years, but I am horrible at keeping it up to date. What good is it if I only update it a couple times per year?

Do you have any reading goals this year? Follow along with me as I get closer to my goal on Goodreads!

  1. I totally forgot about Goodreads. I am signing back in and setting a goal for myself as well!

  2. I had the same realization last year and set myself a goal of reading 24 books in 2014. ... I blew it away by reading 84. I hope you find some delightful books to enjoy this year and can really soak them in, as well as log them. (Maybe it's just me, but I ADORE adding my reviews and information to books in GoodReads because it makes me feel like I accomplished something, haha.)

Do you know what you'll be reading this year? Any specific books grabbed your attention yet?

  3. A few years back I would have had no problem setting a goal to read 60 books for the year--these days, I'm lucky if I read 6 books a year! I totally want to read a lot more in 2015 than I did in '14! Good luck with your goal!

  4. I'm actually really disappointed with how little I read in 2014... I think I just got distracted... And watched a lot of Netflix.

  5. I've been in a book club for a couple of years now and it's a great way to discover things that you wouldn't normally pick up on your own!

  6. Reading is a big goal for me this year. I am focusing on 2-3 books per month. I would do more but some books I like to read only 1 chapter per day in order to let it sink in or work on the actual focus of the chapter. I've purchased 12 of my must reads already. I am also a part of a book club and will be going to my first meetup next month. So excited. Please share what books are on your list.

  7. That's an awesome goal! I was going to set my goal at 12 books in 2015. That's way better than what I read in 2014 considering all I read were children's books for bedtime and textbooks for school -_-
I'm going to start sharing the book I read every month on my blog.

  8. I feel like if you take time to read anything for yourself, you are doing great!! I can't wait to see what you are reading!

  9. That's great! Do you meet in person, or online?

  10. Thanks Hilda! I've found that I read much more when I supplement with audio books. I still read paperback books, but listen to things when I'm in the car, at the office, etc.

  11. I'm with you on the Netflix binges. I'm hoping that this goal will cut down on some of that screen time. There's just so many things that need to be watched!

  12. Thank you! It's definitely going to be tough, but I think with paperbacks and audiobooks, I will be able to do it.

  13. That's awesome!! Congratulations!!

I don't always add reviews, but I always rate the books I add.

I just finished Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, which was pretty good. I have the third Game of Thrones queued up on Audible, and I just bought Serena (the one they are making a movie out of this yr) at Goodwill. I just put a ton of stuff in my "want to read" section too. Do you have any recommendations?

  14. I love it, because it helps me keep track of stuff so much easier! I hate it when I can't remember the title of something, and then I start it again, only to find out that I've already read it.

I'm totally that person who can't remember (or just doesn't know) the titles of books, or movies, or the names of songs.

  15. That is a great goal. I would be happy to be able to read 5 books in a year. I know sad, its hard running around with kids, my mom and keeping up with blogging. You rock!

  16. This is such a great goal. I need to try making reading goals for myself too. I wish you luck.

  17. These are great goals! I need to read more for sure!

  18. Thanks! It was quite the surprise. ;)

That's awesome that you've just finished Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald. I'll have to look into that. LOVE the Game of Thrones books... I'm currently listening to the fifth one via Audible! They're incredibly long, but they're fantastic for walks!

I'd definitely recommend The Age of Miracles by Karen Walker Thompson. That was one of my favorite books of 2014!

  20. It is a little bit of a reaching goal to be honest. I didn't read as much as I'd like this year, so I want to do more this year. I wish you the best this year!

  21. Thanks! I've never set a reading goal, so we will see how it goes!

  22. Thank you! I've abandoned books before, but I'd like to try to finish some that are outside my comfort zone too. Thanks for visiting!

  23. This is actually the first year I've created a goal. You should try, too! Thanks for visiting!

  24. Lots of fun stories :) Thanks for visiting!

  25. Good luck! I set a goal myself that's pretty tough but I hope I can do it :)

  26. Goodreads is such a great tool to track your books and progress! Ever since I started teaching High School English, I jot down a few thoughts after I finish reading a book every time, so I can remember what the book was about and any warnings (language or violence) to advise students about.

Good luck with your goal! I set a goal of 75 this year and I'm finding that listening to audio books while I clean or doing laundry or running around town doing errands is already helping me stay on top of my goal and keeping me mentally stimulated!

  27. Thank you! I usually don't write any notes to myself, but that is a good idea!

I love audio books for exactly that reason! I always have one audio book and one paperback going at once. I find that the audiobooks are better for longer books too. Lately I've listened to The first three Game of Thrones books and The Goldfinch.

I do like YA books, I'll have to check them out!

  28. I know, I am starting to think this goal might have been a little bit ambitious! hehe!
