Choosing Your Wedding Color Palette

Happy Wedding Wednesday everyone! After having a very successful wedding planning trip last weekend, I wanted to touch on one of the questions that I was asked most often: "What are your colors going to be?"

If you had asked me a year or two ago I would have said purple and grey. Before Dave and I were engaged, and before we were actually planning the wedding, I had always envisioned something with deep purples and soft grays. I knew I wanted an outdoor wedding, but that's about it.

Once we decided to have a summer wedding, I knew that my palette had to be a little bit more airy, but could still have a touch of glamour. I still wanted to incorporate purple, because it is my favorite color.

We ultimately decided to go with a palette of lavender, navy, ivory and accents of gold. I think this will give the rustic, elegant feel that I'm looking for, but will still be light and airy for a July 2 wedding.

I had a hard time narrowing down our wedding colors. They shifted around a little bit within a similar palette before I really decided. But now, with so many resources at our fingertips, it has become so easy to gain inspiration and to really see all sorts of possibilities.

Some of my favorite resources are:

Pinterest

I have found some amazing color inspiration on Pinterest. Right now my wedding board is private, but if you could see it, it basically looks like the below two photos. The great thing about Pinterest is that there are so many photos of real weddings, that though it can sometimes be overwhelming, you can really get a good sense of what looks good together in real life. You can collect the photos of inspiration that you want, and organize them.

I organize my boards in a way that groups them sort of how a wedding planning binder would. I have pins for attire, ceremony, reception (decor, food, etc) and then miscellaneous (favors, music, etc). This helps me to keep everything straight.

Other Bloggers

This has been huge for me. I have been taking place in the Wedding Wednesday link up for a while, and have been able to see what other brides are doing for their weddings, bridal showers and bachelorette parties. It is awesome to see what my new blog friends have come up with in terms of color combinations and fun ideas for weddings and parties.

Macy from To Travel and Beyond has an particularly pretty and unique color combination of purple and teal for her wedding coming up this spring. Mary from Eat, Drink and Be Mary also has a beautiful color scheme of coral and champagne for her wedding in August. I can't wait to see photos from their weddings!

Wedding Paper Divas

I have been looking at Wedding Paper Divas a ton for save the dates and invitations, but they also have a new resource with curated Pinterest boards where you can find wedding color inspiration by season! When we decided to have a summer wedding, I wasn't sure if I would be able to incorporate purple into our colors in a way that I liked. Their color schemes have tons of inspiration (that include samples of invitations that fit within that color palette!). The Summer Metallic palette definitely helped me pull navy into the equation for our event.

Bridal Magazines

I haven't been too heavy on buying bridal magazines (there is so much free online!), but when I went on my planning trip last week I was sure to purchase a few to read at the airport. They are full of colorful ideas, and I was sure to tear out some inspirational images to keep in my planning binder. My favorite magazines are Brides and Martha Stewart Weddings.

I hope these resources and tips help you to narrow down your wedding colors! This can be a tough decision, but in the days of unlimited internet resources, it is easier than ever to pick something beautiful for your big day!

  9. These colors sound so beautiful and the perfect balance of class and rustic. I can't wait to see how you use the colors throughout your wedding. Are you getting married this July or next?

  10. Thanks! We are next July. We have had a two year engagement. Since we live away from everyone though, we have to do our planning mostly this summer.

  11. Right! I was surprised by the amount of dress adds though. That was the only drawback.

  12. Thanks!! I thought long and hard about them :)

  13. I love purple and grey!! I still think about it, but I think the grey will get too washed out with so much wood at the barn. If I was doing a fall wedding and did more dark purples and had the leaves changing I TOTALLY would do it.
