Choosing Your Wedding Hashtag

This is kind of a funny fact, but after we told our families, and everything had settled down, one of the first things that Dave and I were talking about after we got engaged was what our wedding hashtag was going to be. I wanted something cute, and he wanted something funny. We both wanted something that fit us as a couple.
According to The Knot, 55 percent of couples use hashtags at their wedding, and you can bet that we will be one of them. With so many people attached to their phones and social media, it is a great way to collect everyone's photos, instagrams and tweets in one place.

Whether you want to go the more traditional route, or have fun with it, choosing your wedding hashtag is lots of fun! Here are some tips for choosing your own wedding hashtag.

Don't Over Think It

You don't need something complicated. If it's too complicated, then it won't be easy for people to use (especially when alcohol starts to get involved!). Keep it simple, include your names or last name and maybe your wedding date. People will like something easy to remember, like #DaveAndAlex2016 or #YargeauWedding

Make it Punny

I love a good inside joke. Our hashtag is a little inside joke between the two of us. I love when people make their hashtags into puns of their last names, such as #TheBestKnightEver or #WalkerDownTheAltar. You can also do cool things with alliteration, like #MatthewsMarriage or #WilliamsWed.

See if it's Being Used

The last thing you want is for all your beautiful wedding photos to be scattered in with random pictures of someone else. Go to Tagboard and see if the hashtag that you want to use is open before you start to use it.

Start Using it Before the Wedding

I have been using our wedding hashtag for all sorts of different planning things, and you may have seen it pop up on my Instagram account!! I plan to tag photos throughout the planning process, so that we will be able to look back on everything. If you would like to follow along with us, we are using the tag #teamwhywedding.

Did you use a wedding hashtag? Did you like having one?

  1. Wedding hashtags are the best thing ever. I have been using two for our wedding, #MrsVolpeToBe is the one I use for all engagement things or things just involving me, and then #VolpesTieTheKnot is our wedding hashtag. Hopefully since we are using both already, nobody will take them. I did have someone add her photo to #MrsVolpeToBe, but it looks like she removed it haha. Nothing like a little hashtag intimidation ;)

  2. I loved our wedding hashtag! I only wish I had started using it earlier in the process. We started using it about a month prior to the wedding and had a good number of guests participate the week of the big day! Ours was #marriedmaitlands. I'm actually using it on the blog to identify all my wedding related posts as well. I love seeing everyone's hashtag at all the weddings we attend. So fun!

  3. These are great tips! We will definitely be having a hashtag as well, and I've been using it for months now, haha. I ended up using some website (I think I found it on Pinterest or through the Knot) that generated options. Ours is #TimmermanPartyof2 ..what did y'all decide on?

  4. I got married too long ago (5.5 years!) to have had a hashtag, but our last name is Alley so I'm sure I could've had something fun. Maybe if we do a renewal or a big anniversary party way down the line.

  5. I've never even thought about having to pick one. I guess I thought they just magically appeared on top of pictures haha. Great tips!

  6. I love this! and I love wedding hashtags! I'm the weirdo who's secretly thought of a few even though I'm not engaged. It's just such a fun part of planning and almost "branding" your big day.

  7. Right! I love stuff like this! All the themey stuff that isn't too typical wedding themey. If that makes sense?

  9. We had one that was generated before, but it was really long and kinda clunky. It was #DaveAndAlTieTheKnot. But now we are going with #TeamWhyWedding. I love yours, and I love that you use it often!

  11. Hahaha!!! I love that you have two!! That is such a good idea! We sometimes use the hashtag #teamwhy, and I was horrified that people started using that. SO. RUDE.

  12. Definitely! The fun thing is that you can easily fine tune them to whatever event you are doing. It would be fun to have it be your last name and what ever year anniversary you were doing.

  13. That's a good one! I love that it gathers everyone's photos and stuff together. Instead of asking for people to send photos to you. And people get so creative with it.

  14. I loved using our wedding hashtag and my bridesmaids actually came up with it! I definitely love all of the punny ones the best, but we weren't that clever. Didn't realize I wasn't following you on IG, but fixed that now :)

  16. My fiance and I are using a wedding hashtag, as well. It took us forever to come up with it, but I'm super excited about it. I double checked it on IG before settling on one, and we went with #happilyeverwhitter. It's corny, but I love it!
